What Are CBD Diamonds?

When Cannabinoids are refined and isolated using the right processes under the right conditions, they can form crystalline structures. These structures have become known as “Diamonds” in the world of cannabis and CBD Concentrates. Because of their increased purity levels & the extra amount of labor that goes into creating diamonds, they tend to cost a bit more than other types of concentrates.

CBD Diamonds are one of the more unique types of CBD Concentrate on the market today. CBD Diamonds are most often cloudy white crystalline structures that are formed from CBD Isolate. In rare cases, higher quality CBD Diamond concentrates like ours here at Sauce Warehouse, will feature clear diamond rocks that are similar in appearance to regular THC/THCA Diamonds.

CBD Diamonds can contain as much as 99.9% CBD/CBDa!! Hemp oil is first winterized and refined to remove all plant lipids, waxes, and fats. Then, the distillate that results is processed using chromatography to crystalize isolated CBD molecules, forming CBD Diamonds.

Some CBD Diamonds products will consist only of the crystalline CBD Isolate based diamonds, while others will also have terpenes added in for flavor. And of course, with the rising popularity of cannabinoids like Delta 8, Delta 10, HHC, THCO, & THCP, we are beginning to see these added to CBD Diamonds as well.

CBD Diamonds and Sauce

Some CBD Diamonds concentrates are made up of CBD Isolate crystals that are soaked in either a broad or full spectrum hemp distillate “sauce”. These concentrates are known as “CBD Diamonds and Sauce”. Terpenes are often added to this type of concentrate, to create what is known as “Terp Sauce”.

CBD Diamonds and Sauce is a CBD Concentrate that mimics the popular THC/THCA Diamonds and Sauce found on the cannabis market in many recreational and medical dispensaries. When vaporized using a dab rig or dab pen, CBD Diamonds and Sauce concentrates deliver a powerfully concentrated dose of CBD which is often accompanied by a flavorful terpene profile. Both combine to provide immediate effects that can rival the best true full spectrum CBD Concentrates.

“Terp Sauce” can be enjoyed all on its own too, without CBD Diamonds. Sauce Warehouse offers many different CBD Terp Sauce concentrates.

What Makes CBD Diamonds Unique?

CBD Diamonds are a unique product because they consist of CBD Isolate in a form not seen in any other type of CBD Concentrate. The possible varieties of CBD Diamonds are endless due to this CBD Isolate base. Terpenes extracted from hemp or cannabis can be added for flavor just as they are added to many CBD Isolate or Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates.

However, CBD Diamonds can also be made into a Full Spectrum CBD Concentrate by adding a CBD Distillate that contains a full spectrum cannabinoid profile. This creates a Diamonds and Sauce consistency that is often more enjoyable in terms of effect and ease of use. The ‘saucy’ consistency tends to make it easier to break the diamonds up and to keep the diamonds on a dab tool when dabbing.

Do CBD Diamonds Contain THC?

Only Full Spectrum CBD Diamonds will contain THC. All CBD Diamonds are formed from CBD Isolate and do not become full spectrum until a full spectrum CBD Distillate containing THC is added to them.

Broad Spectrum CBD Diamonds vs. Full Spectrum CBD Diamonds

CBD Diamonds concentrates exist in a few different variations depending on the materials used to create them. There are purely isolate-based CBD Diamonds with zero THC. There are Broad Spectrum CBD Diamonds with a broad spectrum cannabinoid profile, and also zero THC. And, there are Full Spectrum CBD Diamonds that have a full spectrum cannabinoid profile and up to 0.3% Delta-9 THC.

It’s important to note that even when a Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrate has lab results showing ND(None Detected) or below LOQ(Below Limit of Quantification) for Delta-9 THC, there still may be trace amounts present that could cause a positive drug test.

Isolate Based CBD Diamonds

Isolate Based CBD Diamonds are CBD Diamonds concentrates that have no added distillates. These concentrates will only contain CBD or CBDa. Cannabis Derived Terpenes (CDT’s) or Botanically Derived Terpenes (BDT’s) may also be added to isolate-based CBD Diamonds for flavor and for a classic Diamonds and Sauce consistency.

Essentially all CBD Diamonds products start out as CBD Isolate, as the crystalline ‘diamonds’ are all formed from CBD Isolate. CBD Diamonds only become broad-spectrum or full-spectrum concentrates once other cannabinoids have been added to them. These Isolate Based CBD Diamonds are best for users who may be sensitive to other cannabinoids, and for those who are specifically looking for high doses of CBD & immediate effects.

Broad Spectrum CBD Diamonds

Broad Spectrum CBD Diamonds will have a broad spectrum cannabinoid profile. The COA for these concentrates will usually show no detected Delta-9 THC. Terpenes are usually added for flavor, either CDT’s or BDT’s. To achieve a broad spectrum cannabinoid profile, a Broad Spectrum CBD Distillate is often added to the diamonds, but individual cannabinoids can be added as well in either isolate or distillate form.

Broad Spectrum CBD Diamonds are a good choice for those who want to experience an Entourage Effect by using multiple cannabinoids together, without consuming THC which some users are sensitive to.

Full Spectrum CBD Diamonds

There isn’t much difference between Broad Spectrum CBD Diamonds and Full Spectrum CBD Diamonds in terms of materials used to make them. The major difference is that a Full Spectrum CBD Distillate is added instead of a broad spectrum distillate. This contributes the full spectrum of cannabinoids, including Delta-9 THC, to the CBD Diamonds. These full spectrum diamonds are better for those who aren’t sensitive to THC or required to take drug tests.

For those who are required to take drug tests or are sensitive to THC, THC-Free isolate based or broad spectrum CBD Diamonds are the best choice.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are the fragrant oils that are produced by the resin glands of the hemp plant. These resin glands are known as trichomes. Trichomes are the mushroom-shaped structures that act as a defense mechanism in nature, protecting hemp plants from external threats. The fragrant terpene oils repel these threats and aid the plant in surviving the duration of the flowering cycle. For predators of hemp and cannabis plants these fragrances are undesirable, but us humans seem to love them!

The Entourage Effect

As you may or may not be aware, cannabinoids have been found to have an ‘entourage effect’ when used together. It is thought that each cannabinoid contributes to a greater combined effect than one would experience if only using any one individual cannabinoid.

The now infamous entourage effect created by using multiple cannabinoids together, has also been found to grow stronger when terpenes are included in the mix. Using CBD Concentrates with a full spectrum cannabinoid profile, like Sauce Warehouse CBD Diamonds, that also contain terpenes is a great way to experience this amplified entourage effect produced by using cannabinoids and terpenes together.

What gives CBD Diamonds Their Appearance?

Chemical impurities, solvents, temperatures, and moisture levels encountered during the extraction process are all factors that can influence the appearance of CBD Diamonds.

CBD Diamonds can vary in size from large rocks to smaller crystalline structures. If plant fats, waxes, lipids, or other undesirable compounds are not properly removed from CBD Distillate before the chromatography process, the formation of the diamonds may be negatively affected.

Solvents used in the extraction process can also play a role in the final shape and size of CBD Diamonds. The overall size of diamonds is not always a sign of impurities or flaws in the processes used to extract them. In many cases the differing sizes of diamonds are simply determined by their unique journey through the extraction process.

How Do I "Dab" Diamonds, What Is "Dabbing"?

In the world of CBD Concentrates, “dab” is a term used to describe a small amount of hemp extract. Because hemp extracts are so highly concentrated, a very small “dab” of them is usually all that is needed to get the same effect as eating multiple CBD edibles or smoking a full joint of CBD Hemp Flower.

“Dabbing” is the term used to describe the actual process of consuming the “dab” of CBD Concentrate material. In most cases this process involves the use of a glass water pipe called a “dab rig”. These rigs have either a quartz or titanium attachment, usually called a banger, bucket, or nail, that is heated using a butane torch or an e-nail. Once heated, the “dab” is placed inside the heated attachment using a “dab tool” where it is vaporized. This vapor is filtered through the water as the user inhales through the glass dab rig’s mouthpiece.

Alternatively, a “dab pen” or a portable concentrate vaporizer can be used to dab CBD Concentrates.

What Do I Need to Start Dabbing CBD Diamonds?

Dabbing CBD Concentrates for the first time can seem very complicated and overwhelming, but trust us, it’s not! Once you have all the proper dabbing essentials, you will be dabbing like a true concentrate connoisseur in no time!

Here is everything you will need:

1. Dab Rig or Dab Pen

A dab rig is essential for any serious concentrate connoisseur. These water pipes allow for cool water filtration of vapor, and if you purchase a smaller rig meant to preserve terpene profiles like those made by MJ Arsenal, you will enjoy better flavor compared to a dab pen or other methods of use.

Dab pens are better if you will mainly be using CBD Concentrates on the go or in situations where you need to be discreet about dabbing.

2. Butane Torch or E-Nail

If you are going with a dab pen, you can skip to the next essential item. But if you are using a dab rig, you are going to need a heat source! The cheapest solution is a butane torch. Butane torches as the name implies are fueled by butane that can be purchased at pretty much any gas station these days. You want to make sure the butane torch itself is of high quality. Many torches out there are made with cheap materials and will not last very long. Sauce Warehouse carries high quality butane torches from trusted companies like Blazer Torches and Maven Torches. When using a torch, you may also want to invest in a small tabletop timer so you can time your dabs to be taken at the perfect temperature. Generally, you want to wait about 40-50 seconds after heating your banger until it is red hot.

E-nails are another option for heating your banger. These devices feature a controller box that plugs in to the wall and allows you to set a desired temperature to be maintained throughout your entire dab session. A coil that is attached to this controller box fits snugly around your banger to keep it at a consistent temperature. E-nails are good investments for those who dab daily and often, as buying butane to refill a torch can get costly when refills are needed frequently.

Sauce Warehouse has organization stations available for purchase that not only hold q-tips and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning your banger, but they also feature built in dab timers! These are perfect for keeping your dab sessions organized, clean, and enjoyable.

There are some cool new rigs out on the market now that feature a built-in temperature control system. These rigs are called ‘e-rigs’. Popular brands like PuffCo make these e-rigs and they have become a big hit within the cannabis community. CBD Concentrates can be used in these rigs without the need for a butane torch or an e-nail. Most of these devices are chargeable with built in batteries like a cell phone.

3. Dab Tools

Dab tools are used to remove ‘dabs’ of CBD Concentrates from their containers and place them inside dab pens and heated bangers when using a dab rig. It is important to purchase only quality dab tools from trusted vendors as cheaper tools made overseas may contain toxic coatings that could potentially burn off into your concentrates when inhaling and cause health concerns. These tools are usually glass or stainless steel, any tools with odd coatings especially paint should be avoided at all costs.

There is a plethora of other Dabbing Accessories that you might eventually want to invest in, such as dab pads which are used to set dab rigs on, but the above accessories are the primary essentials that will allow you to begin dabbing CBD Concentrates with ease.

Will CBD Diamonds Get Me High?

CBD Diamonds do have the potential to cause psychoactive effects, but only if they are a full spectrum CBD Concentrate containing THC. If you would like to avoid potentially feeling any psychoactive effects, check the COA for CBD Diamonds before purchasing to ensure they have zero THC.

What Are THCA Diamonds?

THCA Diamonds are similar to CBD Diamonds but the primary active cannabinoid that is isolated to form THC-A Diamonds, is THC-A. THCA is THC acid, the precursor to the Delta-9 THC molecule you are likely familiar with. Delta-9 THC has long been known as the most abundant intoxicating cannabinoid present in cannabis.

THC-A is non-intoxicating on its own, but when exposed to high enough temperatures it will convert to Delta-9 THC, causing the infamous cannabis high most of us know so well. Therefore it is always a good idea to check COA’s for CBD Concentrates for both Delta-9 THC and THC-A levels especially if you are sensitive to THC.

These THC-A rich Diamonds are commonly formed using unique processes that cause THC-A molecules to break away from other cannabinoids and bond with one another to from the crystalline structures we call diamonds.

Is THCA legal?

The Federal Controlled Substances Act does not specifically schedule THC-A as a controlled substance; HOWEVER, THC-A still directly converts into Delta-9THC, a federally classified Schedule I drug. Schedule I drugs are considered by the government to have no medicinal value and a high potential for abuse.

Technically, by heating THC-A Diamonds, converting them into and consuming Delta-9 THC, you are involved in a federally illegal activity. When it comes to the use of any cannabinoid or any cannabis product whatsoever, it is always best to consult your local cannabis laws and regulations before purchasing or partaking.

What is the Difference Between THC-A Diamonds and CBD Diamonds?

THC-A Diamonds are one of the most popular concentrates in the recreational and medical cannabis markets, they are also one of the purest and strongest. A top shelf THC-A Diamonds concentrate can contain up to 99.9% THC!!! That’s quite impressive!

On the other hand, CBD Diamonds must contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by law. When it comes to THC-A content in CBD Diamonds, there may be some CBD Diamond concentrates with higher concentrations, but nowhere near the levels of THC-A Diamonds on the cannabis market.

Some states have set limits for the amount of THC-A that can be present in CBD Concentrates, and even though these laws are rarely enforced, CBD Concentrates hardly ever contain THC-A in levels above 4%. For those who may be curious, the laws set by some states require CBD products to contain no more than 1% total THC. Total THC being Delta-9 THC + THC-A.

Aside from THC and THC-A levels, and the fact that THC-A Diamonds will cause an intense high while CBD Diamonds will not, another major difference between CBD Diamonds and THC-A Diamonds are the processes used to make them.

How Are CBD Diamonds Made?

To make CBD Diamonds, a process known as chromatography is used. This process creates the CBD Crystals/Crystaline structures that have become known as CBD Diamonds.

The process involves a few steps:

First, hemp oil is winterized. “Winterization” is the process of removing undesirable materials from the oil. These materials include plant fats, waxes, and lipids. The winterization process uses an alcohol wash that is heated to around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Immediately after this wash, the material is frozen for about 24 hours.

As a result of this process, the hemp oil is refined to a clear & pure CBD distillate. Clear distillate is a sign that all the impurities and undesirable materials have been successfully removed.

In this step, a chromatography machine is used to isolate the pure CBD/CBDA from the other cannabinoids in the CBD Distillate. The chromatography machine features a few main components:
• Column housing an internal filter • Compressed air • Collection chamber

To operate one of these machines, some knowledge of basic chemistry is required. A very fine sand is often used as a filter. Compressed air is used to push the material being refined through this sand. As the material is pushed through the sand, molecules are separated based on size. Smaller CBD molecules reach the collection chamber first, while THC and other cannabinoids will take a while longer.

Within the collection chamber there is an evaporable solution which is often re-run through the chromatography machine to ensure maximum purity. Once the desired quality is reached, the evaporable solution containing the collected CBD is heated to induce evaporation. What is left behind are pure CBD crystals, aka, CBD Diamonds.

How Are THC-A Diamonds Made?

THC-A Diamonds can be made using two methods. One method uses the same process used to make essentially all other crystalline cannabinoid concentrates; however, the last step is slightly modified. Another method is using a closed-loop system and following a special procedure using a solvent to extract the diamonds.

Crystalline Process

When making THC-A crystalline, a supersaturated solution is made by adding solvent to a highly refined cannabis concentrate. The solvent is then slowly evaporated by applying heat and pressure, and this slow evaporation creates the precise conditions necessary to form crystalline structures.

During this process, the THC-A molecules separate from the refined cannabis concentrate and drop out to the bottom of the container. When the concentration of THC-A and the temperature are just right, the THC-A molecules bond to one another forming the THC-A crystalline or THC-A Diamonds.

Closed-Loop Process

In a closed-loop system, a liquid solvent is used to separate out the active cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material & trichomes into a concentrated solution. This concentrated solution will contain not only the desired cannabinoids & terpenes, but the extraction solvent used as well. For the solution to become a usable cannabis concentrate, the solvent must be removed.

Normally, when making cannabis concentrates using this process, the aim is to remove the solvent as quickly as possible. However, when making THC-A Diamonds the aim is a bit different.

Rather than immediately purging residual solvent using a vacuum oven, a small portion of the solvent is left behind to create a supersaturated THC-A concentrate.

This remaining solvent is then slowly purged from the concentrate solution which enables the formation of THC-A Diamonds. This is not always a quick process, sometimes taking as long as 2 weeks!

What Does “Diamond Mining” Mean?

You may often hear of “Diamond Mining” when someone is describing one of the many processes used to extract THC-A Diamonds from cannabis concentrates. Diamond mining involves placing a cannabis concentrate with an ideal consistency in the proper conditions for THC-A to separate and form diamonds.

What is left behind are the ‘mined’ THC-A Diamonds and a terpene rich cannabinoid concentrate. Some may refer to this as a “THC-A Diamonds and Sauce”. If the consistency isn’t right, the diamonds may not form at all, or they may be too small to efficiently isolate from the rest of the concentrate.

Other Ways To Use CBD Diamonds

If dabbing isn’t your thing, CBD Diamonds can be used in many other ways.

CBD Edibles

Plain old CBD Diamonds with no added terpenes are a great addition to your favorite recipes. These CBD Diamonds can be decarboxylated and added to food or drinks without effecting the taste. Or, if you want to add a specific terpene profile to a CBD edible, simply use CBD Diamonds that have had that terpene profile added.

If the CBD Diamonds contain primarily CBDa, they will need to be decarboxylated. If they are primarily made up of CBD, you can add them right in without worry. Decarboxylation breaks down the CBDa into CBD so it can be properly ingested and produce the desired effects. We have links on all our CBD Concentrate product pages to instructions for this process.

One downside to using CBD Edibles must be noted. Many users find the amount of CBD required when using edibles to produce noticeable effects is just not worth the cost. When dabbing CBD, 25 mg can easily be consumed in just a couple quick dabs. When eating CBD, you will likely need 250mg or more and even then, you may not get anywhere near the same effect.

Mix With Oils or Topical Products

You can also dissolve CBD Diamonds in tinctures, oils, or topical products. The effects won’t be as strong or immediate as dabbing, but this is still a viable way to apply CBD. A popular option is mixing CBD Concentrates with a favorite topical product to create your very own unique CBD topical cream for fighting pain and inflammation.
