What is Distillate?
Distillate is typically an oil that contains an isolated cannabinoid, or a group of isolated cannabinoids. Many different types of distillate exist, the most prevalent in our industry of course is CBD Distillate. There is also CBG Distillate, Delta 8 Distillate, and many other Cannabinoid Distillates available on the market today. Distillates are created using several different processes, the first being crude extraction. This involves using a solvent to extract cannabinoids from the hemp plant material. This will result in a cannabinoid rich extract, but this extract will also contain lipids, fats, and plant waxes that are not always desired in the end product. To remove these, a process known as ‘winterization’ is used to separate the desirable cannabinoids from the undesirable plant materials. Once winterized, Distillate is often decarboxylated. Decarboxylation is the process of applying heat to ‘activate’ acids and convert them to the more easily metabolized forms of cannabinoids.
Full Spectrum CBD Distillate vs. Broad Spectrum CBD Distillate
Depending on the intended use, the processes used to create Distillate and the type of Distillate itself that results will vary. Some Distillates are full spectrum, while others are broad spectrum. Full Spectrum Distillates like Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates, contain the full array of cannabinoids present in the hemp plant including THC. Broad Spectrum Distillates like Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates, contain usually only one isolated cannabinoid such as CBD, CBG, or Delta 8 for example.
