What Are CBD Concentrates?

CBD concentrates are products that contain very high concentrations of cannabidiol, or CBD. These CBD Concentrates may also contain other cannabinoids, including Delta-9 THC, in which case they are referred to as Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates. There are also Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates which contain CBD and a couple other non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBC or CBG.

CBD Concentrates in comparison to other CBD products, allow users to administer a much higher dose of CBD and experience immediate effects due the faster absorption that occurs when dabbing/vaporizing. What Are CBD DABS?

According to the 2018 Federal Farm Bill, Cannabis Sativa L. products containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis are considered hemp products and are federally legal to consume, sell, and ship to all 50 states! Marijuana-derived CBD products that have been extracted from cannabis containing over 0.3% Delta-9 THC are not legal federally and are not classified as hemp products. If you choose to ignore our suggestion, CBD Isolate is probably the safest type of CBD Concentrate to consume when passing a drug test is a concern. And of course, the more frequent your use, the higher the risk of failing a drug test.

How Are CBD Concentrates Made?

There are a few different methods used to extract or create CBD Concentrates and Hemp Extracts. There are essentially two main categories of CBD Concentrate manufacturing, true full spectrum extracts and imitation extracts.

True Full Spectrum Hemp Extracts

True full spectrum Hemp Extracts are concentrates that are made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes directly from hemp plant material using a variety of extraction methods. Solvent-less extraction via a rosin press, and solvent based extraction using supercritical CO2 extraction or other hydrocarbon extraction are the most common methods used.

Solvent-less Extraction

While rare, CBD Rosin is made using a Rosin Press to apply heat and pressure to hemp plant material which squeezes the rosin out onto parchment paper. The rosin is then collected, and it is immediately ready to be consumed or sold. Because the process of pressing rosin is completely solvent-less, no solvents need to be purged and no extra steps need to be taken to make the rosin consumable.

Solvent-based Extraction

Solvent based methods involve pushing a solvent through hemp plant material often through a closed loop system to extract cannabinoids and terpenes. This solvent is then collected along with the hemp extract after the hemp plant material has been filtered out. Because consuming solvents is dangerous the solvent must be purged from the concentrate before it is able to be consumed. This is usually done using a vacuum oven or through evaporation.

Additional steps may need to be taken if the initial extraction process did not remove plant fats, lipids, and waxes. This additional process is called winterization and it removes these undesirable impurities leaving behind a clean extract containing only cannabinoids and terpenes.

Imitation Extracts

Imitation Hemp Extracts and CBD Concentrates are often broad spectrum, but they may also be full spectrum. These are created using isolate and/or distillate as a base. Terpenes and other cannabinoids are added in for flavor and texture. These concentrates are manipulated to ‘imitate’ popular true full spectrum hemp extracts like shatter, wax, and live resin and they are often marketed as these popular types of concentrates as well.

Because this method allows for complete control of the cannabinoid content, it is the most widely used in the industry today where Delta-9 THC levels must remain compliant at less than 0.3%. It is much harder to produce true full spectrum hemp extracts that are compliant.

Types of CBD Concentrates

There are many different types of CBD Concentrates. The main factor that differentiates these different types is consistency. Some CBD Concentrates have a liquid consistency, some are solid, some are powders or crystals, and others may have a few of these characteristics. The most common type of CBD Concentrate on the market today is terpsolate(unfortunately).

Terpsolate is what we at Sauce Warehouse usually refer to as a bottom shelf CBD Concentrate. Terpsolate consists of CBD Isolate mixed with Terpenes to produce a flavorful product that is very high in CBD. Don’t get us wrong, these can be a great way to consume CBD, we just prefer natural extractions that don’t require terpenes to be added in.

CBD Isolate is another common form of CBD Concentrate. CBD Isolate is often pure CBD in a powder or crystalline form and has higher levels of CBD than the other types of CBD Concentrates. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates like Rosin and Live Resin will always have the best taste because of the natural terpenes that are present from the parent material. These contain Delta-9 THC and a variety of other cannabinoids in addition to CBD.

Common Types of CBD Concentrates:

• CBD Diamonds: Pure CBD isolate in a crystalline form. CBD Diamonds can be combined with terpenes and other cannabinoids which is the case with our Sauce Warehouse CBD Diamonds. Sauce Warehouse CBD Diamonds are a full spectrum CBD concentrate product containing a full spectrum cannabinoid profile including Delta-9 THC and terpenes. • CBD Isolate: CBD Isolate contains the highest levels of CBD out of all the CBD Concentrates available on the market. It is most commonly a white powder or crystalline material and can contain up to 99% pure CBD!

• Wax: CBD Wax is usually an oily yet stable substance. Sometimes it is created with CBD Isolate or CBD Distillate mixed with cannabinoids like CBG. Though there are true CBD waxes, such as CBD BHO Wax, that contain natural terpenes and the full spectrum of cannabinoids.

• Crumble: CBD Crumble usually looks similar in appearance to regular Cannabis crumble extracts, and like CBD Wax it can be made using isolate/distillate or a true full spectrum extraction process. Some CBD Crumble is very dry and will break apart like dust, other forms of CBD Crumble are more moist and have a dough like consistency.

• Shatter: CBD Shatter is often very similar to crystalline CBD Isolate, because it is more often than not made using primarily CBD Isolate. CBD Shatter is almost always Broad Spectrum. In rare cases Full Spectrum CBD Shatter can be found, and it will usually look more like traditional shatter made from cannabis with an amber color opposed to the common white color of Broad Spectrum CBD Shatter.

• Live resin: CBD Live Resin contains a larger amount of terpenes and cannabinoids than other types of CBD Concentrates. This is because of the unique process used to create CBD Live Resin. CBD Hemp Flower plant material that CBD Live Resin is extracted from is frozen immediately after harvesting to preserve terpenes and cannabinoids. Other types of concentrates are extracted from plant material that is dried and cured using traditional methods which can destroy many of these precious terpenes and cannabinoids. CBD Live Resin is the preferred type of CBD concentrate for ‘terp enthusiasts’ and those seeking a flavorful experience, but it is also this experience which usually raises the price tag.

• Distillate: CBD Distillate is an oil that contains an isolated cannabinoid, or a group of isolated cannabinoids. Many different types of distillate exist, the most prevalent in our industry of course is CBD Distillate. There is also CBG Distillate, Delta 8 Distillate, and many other Cannabinoid Distillates available on the market today. Distillates are created using several different processes that separate desirable cannabinoids from undesirable plant materials and impurities. Hemp distillates may be either Full or Broad Spectrum, and in some cases, they can be considered cannabinoid isolates.

• Rosin: CBD Rosin like CBD Live Resin tends to have amazing flavor and equally amazing effects due to the high terpene and cannabinoid content. CBD Rosin is produced using only heat and pressure and because of this it is one of the few true solventless CBD Concentrates available. The consistency is usually that of a soft shatter which becomes more of a wax as it is exposed to heat. Unfortunately, because the THC concentration increases as all the cannabinoids are pressed out of a large amount of flower into a smaller amount of rosin, CBD Rosin is rarely ever compliant. Therefore, you won’t find many vendors selling CBD Rosin on the market today.

Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates vs. Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates

The difference between Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates and Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates is quite simple. Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates contain zero Delta-9 THC, and Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC. ‘Full Spectrum’ means the full spectrum of cannabinoids present in the Hemp plant. ‘Broad Spectrum’ means only a very broad spectrum of the total cannabinoids present in the Hemp plant.

Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates contain a broad spectrum of minor cannabinoids aside from CBD such as CBC or CBG. Some users are sensitive to THC or other minor cannabinoids and for this reason they prefer Broad Spectrum CBD Concentrates. Other users enjoy the ‘entourage effect’ created by using the full spectrum of cannabinoids all at once in Full Spectrum CBD Concentrates.
